Free at Last

Well, today is my last day at work. I've spent a lot of time here over the past two years, and I've learned a lot. I've grown to know the people, the processes, and my job very well, and it seems like now that I'm finally comfortable here it's time to leave. I guess most of life is like that: you're just getting settled in and then everything changes. Speaking of changes, I leave for college in about a week and a half. It seems.. unreal? I know in my head that it's coming, but it hasn't really sunk in past that. Perhaps it's because I can't really imagine what it will be like. I've lived the past 18 years with a certain kind of safety and certainty that comes only when living with your parents, and I don't really know anything about what living on your own is like. But that's the reason for college, really. Not so that you can continue your education, but so that you can get halfway out on your own. It's good because it teaches you the skills and habits you need to have for when you're really out on your own, but you can still run home on the days when it gets really tough and have your mom make a nice meal for you, and sleep in a place you know is okay.

I don't know, maybe I'm just feeling sentimental and strange because it's my last day at work. In an hour I'll be all chipper again and I'll wonder what the hell was wrong with me when I wrote this. I bet a nice Coke would help me to feel better.

New Site
July 17, 2003 at 10:30:28 PM

Well, my employer finally launched my new website. Take a peek at www.voelker.com. If you can't tell it's mine, you need to look at some of my pictures and other site designs, because it is very, very me. I like it, though. Well, obviously.

Starrdesc
July 12, 2003 at 1:46:44 PM

I have created something, I like to call it a desktop picture. I also like to call it Starrdesc. Those of you who have been following me for a longer period of time than those new scoundrels will recognize the name as being yet another perversion of the word "StarDesk", my series of planetary desktops. A quick history, for the interested or bored:

Diablo is Cool
July 8, 2003 at 3:09:34 PM

I've been playing Diablo quite a bit lately. It's not new to me, I just picked it up again. It's really, really good. I've been playing it with my buddy Drache, who is very similar to me in some ways, but quite different in many others. I have a level 37 sorcerer from my last stint on the game several years ago, and I am frantically trying to get him up to level 50, just to say that I was able to do it (legitmately - I don't hack). The problem is that I've played for about three hours with him and gotten about 3 million XP.. not good when you need 30 million for the next level. *shrugs, then looks at the clock* Okay, back to work for me.

Work work
July 3, 2003 at 11:22:27 AM

Sorry I haven't updated much lately... at all... I've been working full time. Not that that's an excuse, it doesn't take long to post something, but I'm going to use it as an excuse anyway.

I've been working on a new StarDesk picture with the aim to have this one be the most realistic yet. I want the lighting to be realistic and all such as that. I've got a preview version over here. I've already made some major changes to it per some people's suggestions and I'm planning a few more, but if you think of something go ahead and contact me about it. I've also written a poem, I like it a lot but other people didn't seem to, it's called The Darkness Yard. I'll post it later when I'm at home.

Right now I'm at work. I just finished calling lots of people telling them that their computers are broken and to come pick them up. Dan, who is leaving in two days, is playing this crappy bluegrass music. It's really loud. It feels like someone's poking my eardrum with a sharp object, possibly a pencil.

Current Mood: Nothing. I feel nothing.

Wisdom Teeth
June 1, 2003 at 4:04:03 PM

I had my wisdom teeth extracted three days ago. It hurts quite badly. And my cheeks are all swollen so I look fat. So, that sucks, but it's offset by the fact that I got a new 30 GB iPod. That's pretty cool. It's almost the same size as my old one, but six times the storage capacity. Woo! I've been trying to draw a goatee on myself for a picture in the forum. You can check out the various forms that took, and if you'd like to contact me and tell me which one is best, that'd be cool too.

Stunning Thoughts
May 17, 2003 at 1:58:06 PM

Stunning Thoughts. Started as a picture of a baby. I think it looks less like a baby now... although still cherubic. I also think it looks like a painting. I've been trying to create something lately, but I don't know what. *shrugs* Oh well, I guess.

The Matrix: Reloaded
May 16, 2003 at 2:36:56 AM

I just saw The Matrix Reloaded. Initial thoughts:

The people who made that movie are very, very talented. Why? Well, sure, I mean, the visual effects, yadda yadda. But beyond that: they already have my next ticket sold to me. And possibly another one after that. As well as the DVD.
